Firefighters were called to a vacant block between Parkinson Crescent and Dickson Road on Friday.

Murrumbidgee Police District will allege the fire came within 10 metres of properties on Parkinson Crescent, leading to a number of residents to be evacuated as a precaution.

An investigation by police led them to a McCudden Street property in Griffith where they arrested a 36-yer-old man.

He was charged with intentionally causing a fire and being reckless with its spread.

The man was refused bail and will face Wagga Local Court on Saturday, November 28.

Firefighters have brought a grassfire in the city's west under control.

Fire and Rescue NSW received a call to Parkinson Crescent at 10.55am on Friday to a fire on vacant land which was out of control.

The fire which was brought under control at 12.08pm, was burning behind a row of houses and close the the railway line.

NSW Rural Fire Service volunteers were called to the scene to assist two crews from Griffith's Fire and Rescue brigade.

Thick smoke blanketed a number of homes and paramedics from Ambulance NSW were called as a precaution.

No cause of the fire has yet been discovered, and firefighters are continuing to mop up at the scene.
