Director Public Health Tracey Oakman said the conditions could affect anyone but certain groups - including people over 75, people who live alone, infants and children, and those with chronic medical conditions - are more vulnerable.

"High temperatures early in the season can have a bigger impact on well-being as people are not yet acclimatised," Mrs Oakman said.

The MLHD advises precautions be taken. Drink lots of water, avoid alcohol or sugary drinks, plan to be indoors and out of the heat between 11am and 5pm, minimise physical activity, and check-in on elderly neighbours, family and friends.

Shutting curtains and adjusting awnings to keep the house shaded will also help to keep the cool.
