Riverina Highway Patrol's acting inspector Ben Smith said local officers have made significant contributions to the border operation, but they will start returning in the coming weeks.
He said they will be on the look out for any dangerous behaviour on the highways, particularly as harvest and the warmer months approach.
In other police news:
"We need people to take care on the road and take responsibility for their own actions. If they need a break, have a break. Stop, revive, survive," he said.
Acting inspector Smith said harvest season is a busy time on the region's roads, which will require people to take extra care and exercise patience. He said farmers also need to ensure they move machinery between properties during a time when it is safe to do so.
"Only overtake when it is safe to do so is my main message," he said.
