Hundreds of patrons turned out to Wagga's Turvey Park Hotel on Tuesday to watch Twilight Payment win the Melbourne Cup.

Among them were stalwarts Debbie and Kevin Gilchrist who said they watch the Cup every year and always disagree on picking the winner.
Mr Gilchrist, a former Wagga jockey, said he was usually spot on, though neither of them backed the right horse this year.

The Murrumbidgee Turf Club's Barry Fleming said Wagga had great races and he was looking forward to the next meet in two weeks' time.
Hotel deputy manager Sarah Gwynne said yesterday was the busiest Cup Day she'd seen at the pub.
"We usually have dinners in the bistro and so on, but COVID has kind of stopped that this year," she said.
"Summer will be great because our deck will be up and running. Hopefully it's busy ... It's just lovely to see everyone get out and about."
Anthony Van Dyck, one of the early favourites to win this year's cup, was euthanised after breaking down during the race with 350 metres left to run.
