The 22-year-old, who finished second in last year's Jim Quinn medal voting, believes the time is right to take the plunge and put his focus into his football.
"It's something I've wanted to do for a while but it was down to timing," he said.
"I've finished uni now so I don't have to worry about that, I can focus on footy and get set up there a bit easier."
Redfern played a handful of games with Canberra outfit Belconnen before pulling the pin to ensure his body is in prime nick to impress at West Adelaide.
The Bloods won just two of 14 games this year but are looking to rebuild by forming a young list.
"I just thought they had the most interest. They were really encouraging in what they could offer me, and the guys I spoke to were pretty accommodating," he said.
"Opportunity-wise as well is a reason why I sided with West Adelaide.
"Their age profile is probably about my age, around 20 to 25. They've come down the bottom the last couple of years but they've got a pretty young list and rebuilding.
"I played a bit in Canberra but I pulled the pin on that due to my move, I wanted to give myself a bit of time to get my body right.
"I played maybe three games and I was enjoying it, it was just getting a bit too hard. It was unfair on them when I couldn't really commit 100 per cent."
Redfern will look to work his way into the Bloods' first choice team as he adjusts to a higher level.
"The standard of footy will definitely be a jump, the greater professionalism and and things like that to get my head around," he said.
"It's about getting confident enough to showcase my skills, but once I do that it should be good."
