Seven mates who all studied together at Wagga's Charles Sturt University formed a syndicate and bought into three greyhounds.
One of those is Awesome Catch, who caused a boilover last Friday night when winning the sixth semi-final of the Million Dollar Chase.
It qualified him for Friday night's Million Dollar Chase Final (520m), where the winner receives $1 million in prizemoney.
Awesome Catch is drawn box six and is the joint outsider of the field at $34 but that has not dented the enthusiasm of the syndicate.
"I reckon he'll win it, to be honest," syndicate organiser Hamish Pennington said.
"You've got to be confident, don't you? He's paying a lot of money, he's not very fast out of the blocks but he comes home pretty hard. As long as he stays out of trouble then we'll be perfectly fine.
"We've got a one in eight chance of a million dollars. Not very often you get a chance of that."
The syndicate consists of Pennington, Dale Lane, John Monk, Bryce Elwin, Luke Schulz, William Brown, Tom Dinham.
Lane is one of the syndicate members that hopes to make it to Wentworth Park on Friday night to watch Awesome Catch race.
"I'm hoping to get there. We all went to uni together and I guess like any group of young blokes, we decided we should buy a horse or a dog one day. Just for a bit of fun, it's been brilliant," Lane said.
"Just the journey of it so far, it's been pretty fun. We haven't really lost many races and we've had another couple of dogs start to run in the last couple of weeks too.
"We've had Awesome Catch for about six months, he's probably run for us about 20-odd times and had about 15, 16 wins. It's been very exciting."
For Pennington and Brown, it gets better yet.
The pair are members of the William Farrer Hotel's Super Punters Club, who has a slot in the $1.3 million Kosciuszko at Randwick on Saturday.
Corowa sprinter Front Page will represent the punters club in the big race.
"It's pretty cool isn't it?" Pennington said.
"I'd love to be able to go and watch it run on Friday night and then go to the Everest the next day.
"Everyone's very excited. I said to the boys yesterday I bet you'll never again in your lifetime be able to say you've got a dog running in a million dollar race.
"It's going to be a big weekend."
Awesome Catch is trained by Jodie Lord at Goulburn and has only been out of a placing three times since joining her kennel in June.
