It is understood the supermarket's registers started to malfunction this afternoon, prompting the chain to have to turn customers away.
When contacted by The Daily Advertiser both the Sturt Mall and Southcity Coles supermarkets confirmed the error had forced a closure.
A spokesperson for the Sturt Mall Coles said it had had to "lock the doors" from about 5pm on Friday and was working to restore operation soon.
At the moment, the problem is isolated to the supermarkets and is not affecting the Coles Express or Coles-owned Liquor stores.
Inconvenienced customers around the country took to social media to express their frustration over the unexpected technical problem.
The supermarket giant has not yet confirmed when it expects operation to return.
