The daylight robbery occurred between 1-2pm on Thursday at a home on Gormley Avenue in central Wagga, where medals for service to nursing were stolen, belonging to the resident's grandmother.

Riverina Police District Detective Chief Inspector Winston Woodward said he was "sad to report" the crime.

"An unknown offender broke into the rear window of the residence, they used half a paving brick and threw it through the window to get inside," he said.

"It is particularly sad at this time, when we rely so much on the health department in relation to COVID-19, to see this woman distraught after losing these medal earned by her grandmother for providing a service to the community through nursing which is vitally important."

While it has not been confirmed if it was a targeted attack, Chief Inspector Woodward said they located further property left at a nearby park that belonged to the woman.

"I hope the person who did take them doesn't end up throwing the medals away," he said.

"I don't mind if the person just drops them off somewhere and lets us know where they are - If they think now that they've done the wrong thing, which they have, it's a good, decent act now that they know about the sentimental value of the medals to return them before they end up dumping them."

"I still live under the proviso that a man's home is his castle, and it's a sacred place, so when we do get break and enters, especially ones where some mementos have been stolen, we take it very seriously," Chief Inspector Woodward said.
