The 31-year-old pulled the boots back on for Waratahs for the first time since undergoing knee surgery four years ago.

Ahead of the grand final against Wagga City at Conolly Rugby Complex on Saturday, he knows the time is right to give the game away for good.

"I've loved being back on the field again," Palmer said.

"I've grown up playing rugby and had a lot of fun playing around the world but have had a wretched run of injuries so I'm just happy to finish my time hopefully with a grand final win."

After coaching second grade to a premiership last season the shortened competition really appealed for Palmer. Now he's looking to down Wagga City.

"It was good to come back with the shortened season and get involved for the nine games," Palmer said.

"I've had problems with my knees for the past few years so nine games was plenty."

If the knee problems flare up again Waratahs now have another option for the front row.

Luke Tudulu is now allowed to take part in the grand final after receiving a limited dispensation by the Southern Inland board.

The Temora teenager is allowed to come off the bench if there is an injury in the front row.

Co-coach Michael Davis was pleased to have another option at his disposal.

"At least it adds to the game if there is an injury and it's better than going to uncontested scrums," Davis said.

"Common sense prevailed, which is great."
