The long wait for Wagga High School's athletics carnival was well worthwhile, particularly for five athletes who entered the history books.

In a year in which many schools have foregone sports carnivals, Wagga High was thrilled to get to Jubilee Park last week, some six months after the March carnival was originally planned.
Matilda Cole set two records - in the 13 years girls 400m and 1500m - and Leila Wadley was another multiple record breaker (16 years girls 200m and long jump) as both soared to their respective age championship awards.
National triple jump champion and 16 years boys age champion Kippy Langat also set a new mark in the triple jump as did the senior girls age champion Lauren Jolliffe.
Tayla Harmer was the fifth student to leave with a new record after stamping her mark on the 16 years girls shot put.
Wadley's memorable carnival was completed by victory in the prestigious girls' 100m Gift - a handicapped sprint for the 100m winners of all age groups.
The boys gift was won by Patrick Murphy, the 12 years boys age champion.
A suitable COVID-19 plan allowed the carnival to go ahead safely with students separated into their year groups and spread around the track.
The strict hygiene procedures didn't take away from the festival atmosphere and relaxed vibe.
"The students were keen to get involved and embraced the new novelty events with great enthusiasm," sports coordinator Heath Russell said.
"Getting back into athletics was a great win for the school community."
The winning house overall was Sturt (green) ahead of Macarthur (red). Hargreaves (yellow) was placed third with Farrer (blue) close behind.
