Investigations are now underway following the incident on Monday night about 9.30pm, when an unknown man entered the taxi of a driver parked at Kooringal's taxi rank on Lake Albert Road.
The man produced a knife and demanded cash and cigarettes, to which the taxi driver complied.
Riverina Police District Inspector Adrian Telfer said the victim's response was to be commended under the circumstances.
"That cab driver was threatened with a knife, but he did the right thing and complied with those demands," he said.
The offender fled on foot in a northerly direction with what Inspector Telfer described as "a small amount of cash", leaving the taxi driver unharmed.
Officers from the Riverina Police District are now investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident while detectives appeal for anyone with information or footage to come forward.
In other news:
The man is described as being of Caucasian appearance, approximately 20-25 years old with a medium to solid build and a shaved head with slightly longer hair on top.
He was wearing a grey jumper, black tracksuit pants and was carrying a black backpack at the time of the incident.
Inspector Telfer said community concerns over a reoccurring trend in offences targeting taxi drivers was noted, but waylaid fears of an ongoing threat.
"We do understand that in the last few years some taxi drivers have had offences committed on them in the past, and particularly at that location as well, but we can assure those taxi drivers out there that we are actively looking into this," he said.
Police are supporting the driver in this incident who is helping with inquiries, according to Inspector Telfer.
"This is a very confronting situation to have an armed offender jump in that vehicle and demand cash from him, so we are supporting him as best we can," he said.
"It has a significant impact upon the man though, naturally."
Anyone with information about this incident is urged to contact Crime Stoppers: 1800 333 000 or call Wagga Police Station on 6922 2599.
