A 28-year-old man allegedly became involved in a verbal altercation with two women in the front yard of a home on Clarence Street, Junee, about 4.25pm on Monday.
Police allege the man then punched one of the women in the head.
Another man, 43, came from a nearby house allegedly armed with a knife, and approached the man, before engaging in a physical confrontation. During the struggle, the younger man sustained a cut to his face.
Riverina Police District Inspector Adrian Telfer said the wound was "very serious".
"Any wound caused by a knife has the potential to take a life, we've seen it in the past, so this is a very serious wound and he has since received surgery for it," he said.
Both men then allegedly began wrestling and punching one another before the older man and two women walked back to their home and the younger man returned to his neighbouring property.
Shortly after, the younger man allegedly armed himself with a knife and metal pole and smashed two windows of the neighbour's house.

He then walked to a vehicle parked on the neighbour's property and allegedly smashed the front and rear windscreens and damaged a side mirror.
Officers from the Riverina Police District arrested the 43-year-old man, while the younger man was taken to Wagga Base Hospital for treatment to his face.
The older man was taken to Junee Police Station where he was charged with reckless wounding, armed with intent commit indictable offence, and affray.
Inspector Telfer said there was potential for further charges to be laid.
"We are still yet to interview that individual in hospital as medical treatment takes priority, but ultimately we will be looking at what caused the disturbance, and there may be charges pending for that individual too," he said.
While uncommon, Inspector Telfer said incidents involving weapons such as this were traumatic for all involved.
"These incidents are isolated, however when we do see them, it is disturbing - it's disturbing for the police, for the community of Junee, and the extended Riverina.," he said.
He was granted conditional bail to appear in Junee Local Court on Friday, November 6, 2020.
"We are very satisfied so far that there is no outstanding danger to the community, we've identified the individual who was involved, and he's being put before the court," Inspector Telfer said.
