Turvey Park Fire and Rescue crews were alerted to the Mount Austin fire at about 12.40am.
They arrived on the scene on Coyne Street just four minutes later.
The fire was extinguished using an aerial pump at 1.16am, leaving the severely damaged Holden sedan doused in firefighting foam.
Riverina Police do not believe the fire was a targeted attack on the victim, though they assume it was "malicious in some way" and deliberately lit.
Police inquiries are ongoing.
