The prestigious schoolboy rugby league competition will be decided on Wednesday night at Equex Centre when the final two games are played.
Mater Dei Catholic College put a severe dent in Kooringal High School's aspirations with a 6-4 win at Paramore Park, at the same time Kildare Catholic College continued their undefeated run with a win over Wagga High School.
It means, Kildare only need to defeat Kooringal on Wednesday night to retain the Hardy Shield for another year.
If Kooringal win, it will come down to for and against between them, Kildare and Mater Dei, who face Mt Austin High School on Wednesday night.
Mater Dei co-coach Sam Bailey is happy his team remains alive in the competition after Monday night's win.
"We're alive and still in it, I suppose, so we're always looking ahead," Bailey said.
"The boys are focused on playing their game and putting as many points on as we can and we'll wait and see what happens.
"If Kooringal play like they did (on Monday night), I'm sure they'll give Kildare a good run."
Mater Dei have done the math and believe they will need to defeat Mt Austin by about 28 points to be a chance of winning the title.
Their chance comes after a second half try to Nathanael Mooney under the posts helped Mater Dei to a 6-4 come-from-behind win over Kooringal High.
Mooney, and fellow forwards Bryce Magnone and Jacob Cain, were among Mater Dei's best in a dour struggle in wet conditions.
Mater Dei were again without key pair Wilson Hamblin and Tristan Wheeler, who are not expected back for Wednesday night's final game.
Wednesday night: 5pm: Mater Dei v Mt Austin; 6pm: Kildare v Kooringal High.
