In a COVID-19 impacted season, in which there'll be no finals, the Wanderers' 2-0 victory against the powerful club was enormous.
"We targeted the match as a grand final, to see where we're at. It was our gauge match," coach Michael Lucas said.
"They are the club to beat, particularly in the Under 18s."
Midfielder Samson Lucas scored both of Wagga's goals before half-time.
It was a strong team effort led by Joshua Timothy-Nesbitt, Damon Hurst and Gerard Okerenyang, who has been "outstanding" since stepping in at left wing back for key player Conrad Eyles who the team was shattered to lose to an ACL injury in round one.
The win keeps the Wanderers unbeaten but second on the ladder on goal difference behind Canberra Olympic.
Lucas said their draw against another powerhouse, Belconnen, was a good sign two weeks ago but the weekend's win was particularly satisfying.
Canberra Croatia appeared to be going all out for glory, picking up a host of players in the off-season from last year's Under 16s premiers, Tuggeranong. And they have a gun striker, Daniel Anderson (37 goals in 26 games last year) who Wagga was able to shut out.
"They're a really good bunch, I couldn't be prouder of the group," Lucas said.
The season is 10 games long with the premiership to go to the team that finishes on top. But Lucas said they're taking the long range view, treating this year as "learning and education" process for their assault on the league next year.
The Wanderers won the Under 18s premiership last year but all of those players graduated out of the age group.
This Under 18s side is made up of players who are almost all still eligible for the Under 16s. Only a handful of players are turning 17 this year, the rest could still, and sometimes do, play in the lower age division.
They were the only junior boys team to beat Canberra Croatia. The 16s went down 3-1, the 14s 3-0 and a gallant Under 13s lost 2-1.
In Sunday's junior women's games, Wanderers' under 17 team won 4-0 and the 15s enjoyed a 3-0 win. The under 13s lost 5-0.
