The commission, originally planned to conclude at the end of August, will wrap up on October 28.
Royal commission chair Mark Binskin told the government the disruption of the coronavirus pandemic had made it difficult for many stakeholders to provide the required information in the given time.
With hundreds of thousands of pages of evidence to go through, the chair said the extension would allow the commission to give each submission the appropriate consideration.
In an effort to allow changes to be implemented in time for the upcoming fire season, interim observations are expected to be supplied to the government on August 31.
