The talented lock is seeking further advice after re-aggravating the problem in the win over Kangaroos last season.
Captain-coach Cameron Breust admitted it is a big blow to the side.
"He's had ongoing back problems for probably 12 months now and it's got to the point where he is in too much pain from day to day," Breust said.
"He's going to get medical advice but at this stage it is looking like it is going to be an extended sideline period."
Joe Leggatt comes into the second row after returning from a season with Temora.
Breust believes it is a good opportunity for him to fill the void.
"It's disappointing as he (McCauley) is a leader of the team and is one of our best players," he said.
"(However) Joe is a quality player who brings a lot to the team so he will get his opportunity to start in the team and it is his for the taking."
It is one of two changes ahead of the clash with Southcity forced by injury with Zac Wilson replacing Edan Price in the centres.
