Fire and Rescue NSW crews are on scene in Bulolo Street, Ashmont, where zone commander Stewart Alexander said firefighters have brought the flames under control.
"[Firefighters] continue to work to ensure the fire is completely out and has not spread to neighbouring units," Superintendent Alexander said.
Duty Commander at NSW Fire and Rescue, Frank Finlay, said the numerous Triple 0 calls were made regarding the blaze at about 2.30pm.
"When crews arrived there were large plumes of smoke and a working fire in one of the units," he said.
"Crews were quick to respond and able to extinguish the one unit fire to stop it spreading to three adjoining unit blocks."
Commander Finlay said they held concerns that the surrounding units would catch alight as well.
"Firefighters were concerned because it had a common roof void, so it could have spread quickly to the adjoining units," he said.
It is not yet known what sparked the blaze, but firefighters are continuing to investigate where and how the fire started.
Police have blocked access to the street at the Borneo Place intersection, at the northern end of Bulolo Street.
Paramedics were dispatched to the scene, a spokesperson for NSW Ambulance said. No one required treatment and the crew remained there on stand-by.
