The NSW government ruled community sport could commence from July 1, meaning teams now have just over a week to run contact and game simulation drills before Football Wagga's senior seasons start next Saturday.
Until now teams have been limited to basic drills in order to comply with coronavirus restrictions.
Football Wagga will enjoy the longest season of the four football codes, with an 11-game regular season to be followed by a three-week finals series.
All teams will play in finals, with the competition to be divided into top and bottom halves (cup and plate).
"I'm pretty happy with how they've put it together. Our guys were a bit surprised at how many games they will get," Irlam said.
"The decision to offer a finals series for the top and bottom half of the league so each team plays more games makes it a bit more palatable as well.
"I think we normally play 18 games plus a finals series, to play 11 and a finals series it could be a lot worse.
"Football Wagga did pretty well in having contingencies in place on what the season could look like depending on when or if restrictions were eased, or what guidelines were going to be in place."
Irlam said the Tolland men will field three grades this year, with numbers largely unaffected by the Covid-19 shutdown.
The Wolves are confident of improving from last year's seventh placing in Pascoe Cup.
"I'm really happy with how things are looking. We're getting good numbers to our training sessions and we're looking forward to getting some contract and game situation training in with the changes in restrictions," he said.
"We'll probably try and fit in an interclub game in this weekend as well to blow out the cobwebs.
"Obviously I was hoping going into the season that it would be difficult for me to pick sides, and it looks like that's the way it's going to be."
