New recruits join Riverina Police District on first day of work

The police district's Commander Superintendent Bob Noble today welcomed the five new probationary constables, who received the regional posting after training at the NSW Police Academy in Goulburn.

"These young people bring the freshest of training techniques, the latest strategies and of course great enthusiasm, and we are really pleased to welcome them on board," he said.

"We have certainly been doing a lot of extra jobs that you wouldn't normally associate with public safety or law enforcement surrounding the COVID-19 event, as well as having a few officers transfer out in recent months, so we are definitely looking forward to the boost."

Four of the new recruits will be based in Wagga while a fifth will take up position in Junee.

"Obviously we have had staff shortages there for the past four months, and so we've been bringing in police from here obviously but also from Cootamundra and Temora, but to have an actual officer stationed there will be a huge benefit, particularly considering the jail expansion in Junee," Superintendent Noble said.

One new probationary constable Jared Zulic said while he didn't expect the regional posting, he was excited to serve his new community.

"I originally wanted to go to Sydney, but here I am in country NSW, I never thought I'd be here, but it's a great opportunity and I'm really looking forward to it," he said.

"The people here are lovely."

The 20-year-old was originally a part of the military for a few years before realising his dream and joining the force.

"Policing is all I've ever wanted to do, so I'm glad to start the job and get into it," he said.

"Representing the community and helping people out is what I have always wanted to do."
