Xavier Williams-Byers, 12, is all set to attend the two-week program at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Centre in Huntsville.
"I think I'm most excited to be around so many other kids and get to know them and make friends," he said.
"I also can't wait to learn how the galaxy works, and find out all the answers to the planets and belts, how gravity works, and just space itself."
Currently in year 6 at Holy Trinity Primary School, Xavier's NAPLAN results landed him the ticket to camp, and mum Jasmine Williams said his passion for space was rooted in his Indigenous background.
In other news:
"He's always been quite interested in space and geology, but I think his Indigenous background has made him even more passionate as he connects with a lot of our dream time stories in the sky and stars," she said.
"He can't wait to go over and share those stories and our Wiradjuri culture with the kids in America."
Xavier's grandmother Lee Williams said she was proud of her grandson, and will be joining him on the journey.
"Most of the Koori opportunities are for sporting achievements, but Xavier has gotten into this purely on academics and he's done so well, I am very proud of him," she said.
The camp may yet be postponed to 2021 as the COVID-19 pandemic continues, but Xavier will soon be on his way to discover the wonders of the galaxy.
