The Wagga council this month began work on a masterplan for the city's most prominent trail and will soon be drawing up a draft plan for public consultation.

Parks and recreation strategic asset planner Ben Creighton said the council was looking at ways to make the trail more accessible to all as the city's walking and riding tracks become more popular.

"With the COVID-19 situation recently there's been a large increase in people that are both walking and riding," Mr Creighton said.

"The trail has great opportunities for people to get out there and do some exercise, be active, see different parts of the city and it's all pretty close within the city area itself."

Still in the early stages of planning, Mr Creighton said a range of ideas had already been raised including lookout areas at Willans Hill and Rocky Hill as well as shorter walks connected to the 42 kilometre trail.

"We're looking at how we can create some smaller loops within that so people, if they don't want to do the full 42 kilometres, can still do a loop."

"Some of the things that have already been suggested to us are things like additional amenities, additional car parking spots ... water bubblers and tree planting," he said.

Mr Creighton said the council would also be working closely with the local Wiradjuri people to ensure the many important cultural sites along the route were highlighted.

The community engagement process is expected to begin in July, with projects to be completed through the years following the completion of the masterplan as funding becomes available.
