MANGOPLAH-Cookardinia United-Eastlakes netball coach Marie Hope says playing for a flag is non-negotiable, adamant not crowning a Riverina League premier would be like playing "an extended pre-season."

The Hume League's decision not to play for a premiership this season due to the coronavirus pandemic has received some backlash, and sparked concerns other leagues could follow suit.
The Goannas claimed last year's title and want to be afforded a chance to defend it, even if the season is cut in half.
"If it's safe and appropriate we'd love to have some sort of season this year, and play for a flag as well," Hope said.
"You need that purpose to play for, otherwise it becomes an extended pre-season. We're keen for that to happen (play for a flag) as long as everything's going well, we understand netball is a very small part of the picture.
"Everyone loves to play just in general, but playing for that purpose brings out that extra motivation and drive in players.
"Even though it doesn't resemble a regular season everyone's still competing on an even keel, so it's up to the team who can produce.
"It's still about who can produce the best in the period of time we've got."
Hope's stance was supported by Coolamon coach Claudia Barton, who said her squad wants a goal to strive for.
"I think the Hume League has suggested they won't have a premiership and a few of the girls have said it would be disappointing if it came to that," she said.
"Ultimately that's what you play for, because we're all so competitive as well.
"We're hoping that doesn't happen, but otherwise we'd be fairly keen to get back.
"Especially the social aspect, the mums on our team have a very solitary lifestyle at the moment so it would be good for them."
Coolamon confirmed via social media on Friday their intention to return to training in stages, with only the most senior grades returning initially.
