In the Wagga local government area speed was a contributing factor in 17.8 per cent of all crashes between 2014 and 2018, which is a higher rate than the state average of 15.7 per cent.
It is because of this, Wagga council technical and strategy manager Peter Ross said the 'Slow Down in My Street' initiative will target five local roads that are notorious for drivers creeping over the speed limit.
This includes Hampden Avenue towards Cartwrights Hill, Gregadoo Road, Henwood Avenue, Copland Street and Red Hill Road.
Over a five-week period, starting Monday, Mr Ross said drivers will notice a speed radar and message boards saying 'slow down' on the five selected streets.
"Everyone is living in a fast-paced world, rushing to get everywhere, but they can still get where they need to go five kilometres an hour slower and in less than a minute's difference. Slow down and be aware," he said.
From July, Mr Ross said people will be able to nominate their own streets for the campaign's next stage.
In other news:
"Everyone has a story about how speed has affected them. It needs to be talked about and if the council can create awareness of this issue amongst the community, then we can all do it together," he said.
"It's just a matter of having that conversation and making safe driving a priority."
Riverina's highway patrol supervisor Steve Boomfield said police will increase patrols in those areas to send the message that "no level of speeding is safe".
He said the five roads were over-represented in the number of speed offences detected.
