The Hawthorn star told Fox Sports last week he was "disappointed" the AFL's private discussions with players on the prospect of playing out of hubs was leaked so quickly to the media.
Players going into hubs for almost five months was raised as the worst case scenario, but the former Cootamundra, Temora and Wagga Tigers junior has his fingers crossed that won't be the case.
"The AFL hasn't released what we're going to be doing, and it changes every 24 hours on what could happen," he said.
"The better health our state and country is in, the easier it will be for us to travel around freely.
"We might be in hubs for a short amount of time or longer depending on how it goes, but currently we've got no idea.
"What happened in the meeting got out so quickly, which was disappointing from a PA (Players Association) point of view.
"Most of the emotion and angst was around the 21 weeks, probably what was sold was it was a highly possible situation.
But as the dust settled it sounds like maybe (there'll be) a few weeks in a hub and hopefully borders start to open up."
Smith said it will be up to individuals within clubs to decide for themselves whether they want to enter a hub, but for now is content to spend some quality time with four-month-old Isla.
"She (wife Candice) was telling me to go, I think she's sick of me," he laughed.
"Her apprehension if it was going to be for an extended period of time was not her being unable to cope with looking after our daughter, but that I'd miss out on so much.
"I've been lucky enough to see her from two months to four months, and hopefully another month by the sounds of it."
