The seven-year-old hadn't been out of the top four in his last four runs, before finally coming out on top.
Reinsman Jared Kahlefeldt was thrilled to see him breakthrough.
"He's been knocking on the door so it was good for him to get a win," Kahlefeldt said.
"His form has been pretty good actually and with his racing style he needs a bit of luck, but he has been thereabouts and is in good form at the moment."
Starting from barrier five, Kahlefeldt was able to position Hilly perfectly in the running line.
Sitting in the one-one, Hilly ($7) found room up the home straight to run past Cee Cee Ambro ($5) and win by 2.5 metres.
Kahlefeldt thought some improved gate speed helped bring up his ninth win at start 111.
"He is showing a bit more gate speed in the last four or five starts so it has been a bit better and we can put him into the race," Kahlefeldt.
"His gate speed is not tremendous but it is enough to put himself in a position.
"He loves a helmet to follow and he has got a pretty good sprint when we let him go so we are real happy with how he's going."
Now a ratings 62 pacer, Hilly will head to the heats of the Regional Championships on Friday.
While the stable doesn't have huge expectations, Kahlefeldt thought Hilly deserved his shot.
"I think we are going to put him in the series," he said.
"We are realistic and he's a horse who probably isn't going to win it but he might be able to sneak a place with the right run.
"There is a good chance of him to earn some prizemoney."
Kahlefeldt also has three drives for his father Paul at Wagga's next meeting on Monday.
He rated Soho Beijing the best of his chances.
Meanwhile Jackson Painting scored another double on Saturday night.
Georgie Martin led all the way to make it consecutive wins on the track before Pelican Fly made it a race-to-race double for Painting and trainer David Kennedy..
In his first run for the stable, Pelican Fly held off a late charge from debutant Clowns Tothe Left to win by a short half head.
It just denied Daryll Perrot a double after driving Tiger Cheddar to victory for Ian Edyvean.
Painting was impressed with Pelican Fly.
"We got him about three weeks ago and set him for this race being a three-year-old race so it was good to get the chocolates," Painting said.
"We'll look to give him a let up, a couple of months off and bring him back for the Breeders Challenge."
The NSW Breeders Challenge has been delayed due to the coronavirus.
Georgie Martin is heading towards the Wagga Pacers Cup on May 24, with the New Zealand-bred mare ineligible for the upcoming group one series.
She has won seven of her 11 starts for Kennedy.
