Wagga cleaner gives free cleaning to healthcare workers

Cleaning Excellence owner Scott Redmond said it was his way of giving back to healthcare workers while also making sure his fellow cleaners got a couple more shifts to help them during this slow season.

"As businesses we've got a responsibility where we can to help the community, because if we all help each other we're all going to come out of this a little bit better than if we don't," Mr Redmond said.

"Front line medical workers are the people who are most at risk, so if there's ever going to be an essential worker it's got to be them."

Mr Redmond said he could empathise with how tough being a healthcare workers could be, having worked as an assistant nurse at an aged care home back in the day.

He has since changed career tracks and become a cleaner, and Mr Redmond said the coronavirus has reignited his pride in the cleaning profession.

"I wouldn't put us in the same category as medical workers, but I do class us as essential and that's something I've spoken about since the early days of coronavirus," Mr Redmond said.

"Cleaning is a vital part of the sanitising process; it's all about knowing how to use chemicals property and the proper cleaning techniques."

These days he has had to be extra stringent with his cleaning protocols, fastidiously wiping all the door handles, light switches, and other hotspots that could spread the risk of coronavirus.

For those who are cleaning their own homes, Mr Redmond's expert advice is to clean surfaces first with a wipe-down before applying sanitiser or disinfectant.

Mr Redmond has been taking in nominations from the community, and on May 10 during Mother's Day he will be drawing names out of a hat to decide who gets the three months' worth of weekly cleaning.
