The chief executive of the AFL, Gillon McLachlan, will provide an update on the game - including community football - on April 30.
The working party set up to help navigate an unprecedented season for the Farrer League and Riverina League had its second video meeting on Wednesday night but will await instruction.
"We're waiting for the AFL to provide guidelines," AFL Riverina chairman Michael Irons said.
"We've developed some options for a 2020 season but we can't finalise those until we receive guidelines from the AFL. We also receive information on any changes to government restrictions."
Irons said the working parties for the region's junior leagues have met once but there won't be any further meetings until the next national update.
The NSW Rugby League announced this week that it's aiming for grassroots competitions to return on July 18, meaning Group Nine can plan for potential play in three months.
That's the start of the third school term, and assumes no extension to the current NSW public health order restricting gatherings, which expires at the end of June.
AFL Southern NSW regional manager, Marc Geppert, said they won't speculate about the possibilities for Australian rules, given there should be some clarity in coming weeks.
The AFL is also likely to be guided by the Victorian government which has a state of emergency in place until May 11, after which it may relax some state restrictions.
"(Planning for a return) is certainly not specific to our region. It's a state and national approach at the moment, with our governance structure," Geppert said.
"This key announcement that the AFL are due to make at the end of April will give us more information to pass on to clubs and leagues.
"At this stage we're not being pressured into making a decision about a return to play.
"There's a complex road map the AFL is working on and the review from the government in May, around the restrictions currently in place, is a really big indicator."
