The Murray stable boast a formidable reputation of setting a horse for the Wagga Gold Cup carnival and it continued with the win of Miss Scorcher ($2.30) in the $36,000 Kooringal Stud Wagga Town Plate Prelude (1200m).
Aided by a top Blaike McDougall ride, Miss Scorcher always looked to be travelling well and ran down tearaway leader Fermanagh Lad in the final 100 metres to score in impressive fashion. Viceroy ran third.
Kembla Grange trainer Graeme Murray confirmed the next stop is the Wagga Town Plate.
"That's been the plan this preparation," Murray said.
"We were always going to come to come here, the Championships were a non event."
Miss Scorcher went around in two heats of the Provincial Championships but the Wagga feature sprint has always been the goal for the four-year-old mare.
She is no stranger to Wagga, winning the 2YO Handicap on Town Plate day in 2018 in devastating style.
Meantime, Canberra three-year-old Cyborg ($3.50) secured his place in the field for the MTC Guineas with a strong win on Sunday.
Brendan Ward rode for luck and it came off as Cyborg burst through along the inside to win the Prized Icon @ Kooringal Stud MTC Guineas Prelude 3YO Benchmark 66 Handicap (1400m).
Canberra trainer Norm Gardner had the MTC Guineas picked out for Cyborg for some time and was thrilled the son of Magic Albert has stepped up to the mark with back-to-back wins.
"I was a little bit concerned about the 1400 but ridden that way, I don't think it will be a problem with the 1600 now," Gardner said.
"It all comes down to the barriers.
"I was surprised today, he was settled in the tie ups, he was beautiful and relaxed in the mounting yard and it sort of worries you a bit when they're not normally like that, but I think he might have turned the corner this horse.
"I think he might have turned the corner and I think we might be looking at a nice horse."
