Wagga social housing plans on show for proposed Spring Street units

The NSW Land and Housing Corporation announced last week that it intends to build a $1.47 million block of four one-bedroom social housing units at 16 Spring Street with on-site parking and associated landscaping.

A housing corporation spokesperson said it had sent a letter to residents in November and had sent another letter with an artist's impression, site plan, building elevations and a request for feedback.

The draft plans show the two-storey unit block rising to a maximum of 7.54 metres off the ground and includes balconies that require the removal of one tree and replacement of three others.

Wagga-based Nationals MLC Wes Fang said the new units were "part of a longer and wider ranging view" that the government had taken on social housing.

"The Spring Street site is well located for transport, medical and a lot of the services that people will need.

"It's a good location for people needing smaller accommodation."

Mr Fang said he had seen reports about neighbours' concerns.

"We have a very robust system in place from the Department of Communities and Justice for dealing with disruptive tenants," he said.

Subject to planning approval, construction should begin in late 2020, with first residents likely to move in around mid-2021.

There is also a new public housing block proposed in Wagga's South Parade.
