While the low water level at the lake is a concern to many, it provided an opportunity for a more thorough clean-up, with volunteers able to search right up to the water's edge for rubbish.
Wagga Urban Landcare facilitated the clean-up with community members invited to pitch in as much or as little time as they could.
A total of 33 volunteers spent the morning scattered around the lake, bringing back about 40 bags of rubbish.
Items found included a large volume of discarded plastics along with glass, fishing gear, toys and golf and tennis balls.
The final haul of rubbish collected at the lake alone totalled about 750 kilograms.
Across the city, the Wagga Sunrise Rotary Club's clean-up at Flowerdale Lagoon and an event at the Shanty Reserve hosted by OzFish Wagga were among the Clean Up Australia Day efforts.
