The mother, who is seven months pregnant, tried to save her son's ashes from her McKell Avenue home but was overwhelmed by smoke before she was able to reach the urn.
She begged Turvey Park firefighters to save her son's ashes, and they succeeded in retrieving the urn as well as several personal possessions and clothing.
The mum's aunt Melissa Jones said the urn was dearly precious to her, which is why she was determined to save it.
"She wouldn't leave until she got her son out, who passed away three years ago," Melissa said.
"I'm glad they're all safe and everything's okay because she lost her house over in Ashmont a few years ago from the same thing."
The mother collapsed to the floor shortly after leaving the house, and she was rushed to Wagga Base Hospital with her daughter who was also caught up in the fire.
In other news:
Turvey Park fire station was called to the scene at 5.52pm, and five minutes later two firetrucks arrived at the scene to battle the fire, which had spread to a hallway and one of the bedrooms.
Turvey Park station commander Jeff Edwards credited his team for saving the two women and their possessions.
"We sent the boys back in to save the urn and a few personal belongings," Mr Edwards said.
"Everything was safe and sound."
Mr Edwards said the station would be in touch with the family to ensure they had clothes and a proper place to sleep.
"We will be getting in touch with the department of housing," Mr Edwards said.
The scene was cordoned off by Wagga Police and electricians were called to identify electrical hazards.
The mother and daughter are currently being treated in hospital.
