It follows the closure of Eunony Bridge almost two weeks ago.
A Transport for NSW spokesperson said the volume of traffic has increased at peak periods compared to the weeks before the bridge closure.
More than 6500 vehicles are driving through the city each day on the Sturt Highway between 7am and 10am and from 3pm to 6pm - an increase of 1239 vehicles.
The spokesperson said the largest increase in traffic was recorded at the intersection of Sturt Highway and Tarcutta Street.
This morning, it was impossible to miss the motorists banked up at the intersection with vehicles coming to halt well-beyond the Homebase roundabout.
Drivers travelling towards the city centre via Lake Albert Road were once again banked up to the Copland Street traffic lights.
"Transport for NSW will continue to closely monitor intersections throughout Wagga and will make adjustments to traffic lights to improve traffic flow," the spokesperson said.
In other news:
Wagga City Council had warned drivers to prepare for thousands of extra cars and trucks driving through the city once the bridge was closed for its multimillion-dollar upgrade.
Vehicles accessing Bomen and North Wagga will be detoured via Wagga until August 1.
Wagga council's general manager Peter Thompson said the recent theft at the Eunony Bridge construction site will not change the project's completion date.
The council was forced to tighten security and block access to the river near the bridge after specialised equipment was stolen.
"In the fullness of time, I don't think it will have an impacted on construction," Mr Thompson said.
