The Wagga Triathlon Club member finished second in both races thus far at Ganmain and Temora to lead the standings on eight points, just ahead of Ganmain winner Liam Wilcox (seven).
A $1000 prize is on offer for the men's and women's overall winners, but the 40-year-old expects this week to be the biggest challenge yet, with the top five at each race earning points.
"It's the same format as Ganmain so it really suits the guys who are quick through transition. With these short races, it could even come down to who gets through there the quickest," Donaldson said.
"It's always pleasing to be in the mix, there's so many good racers but you just have to see who turns up and who's fit.
"The reality is people want to race, that's what it's all about and even if there's no prize money there's a bunch of people who go to these things to learn what it's all about, and others who use them as warm ups for longer events.
"It's a great chance to see where you're at and there's guys from Albury, Young, Wagga, Temora and they're all good, you just want to see how you're travelling against everyone else."
Donaldson said a handful of strong competitors who will use the race as preparation for next week's Husky Triathlon Festival at Jervis Bay will be hard to beat.
"It'll be a good field, they always put on a good race out there," he said.
"A couple of guys from Wagga who are long course specialists who are getting ready for next week will be a challenge, it's going to be tough to get on the podium.
"They're great events, my kids can go along and race as well as myself and it's great everyone gets involved."
Hillston's Claudia Taylor will be looking to extend her lead in the women's pointscore after edging out Ganmain's Chloe Hamblin in the first two races of the series.
The main race comprises a 2km run-20km cycle-300m swim and 4km run format, and begins at The Rock Recreation Ground at 9.15am.
Sub junior, junior, walkathon and enticer events are also on offer from 8.15am, with registrations closing 30 minutes before each race.
