After spending nine years with the AFL, Mahar has accepted a new opportunity with the YMCA in Canberra.
AFL NSW/ACT chief executive Sam Graham paid tribute to Mahar's contribution to football in the region.
"Steve has had an outstanding career with the AFL and has contributed substantially to the growth of our game in the ACT and Southern NSW," Graham said
Mahar will commence in his new role at the end of February with the recruitment process for his replacement to start shortly.
