For the past two years, the 14-year-old has lived nearly 17,000km away from Wagga, but the city will always have her heart.

So, rallying her friends and family, she began a cake sale to raise vital funds for the fight against the fires.

"Mum and I baked a lot of cakes, brownies and cookies and I asked some of my friends to help bake," Sophie said.

"Once the school principal had agreed I could organise the bake sale, school staff put up posters promoting the sale and one of my teachers, Miss Oliver helped me to organise the stall and money."

Speaking to her teachers and fellow students at the North Bridge House Hampstead school, Sophie found that many did already know about the fires in Australia and also wanted to help.

"I wasn't surprised [they wanted to help], as all of my teachers and my friends are very supportive of what I do," Sophie said.

"All of my friends and peers where aware of the situation in Australia as it has been on the news a lot in London."

School principal, Brendan Pavey, commended the idea when Sophie presented it to him.

"As head of geography, I would add that all the pupils have been learning about Wildfires in their geography lessons, they were shocked by the images and figures from Australia and keen to help in any way they could," Mr Pavey said.

"Several pupils baked cakes and it was a sell out raising almost £300 in a single break time."

Through her efforts and that of her peers, Sophie managed to raise £271 - which roughly converts to $521 in Australian dollars.

Soon after her bake sale, Sophie wired her money to a variety of Australian charities that will aid in the rehabilitation and rebuilding of fire-affected wildlife and towns.

"I hope that the money I donated to the animal charities goes to stop some of the animals from dying and to help with their injuries," Sophie said.

"I also donated to the Rural Fire service of NSW to help the volunteers and also to the people who have suffered and lost everything."
