While the duathlon events will still be held, it's the first time the Riverina Tri Series event has called off the triathlon due to a lack of water.
"We went out there during the week and had to make a decision. It was below waist height, a metre deep at best in places and it's just not deep enough to swim," Temora Running and Multisport Club vice president Peter Harper said.
"We've been holding this race at the race for close to ten years and it'sthe first time we've had to cancel it due to water depth.
"There is a pool in town, but unfortunately with the bikes the traffic plans have to be submitted and at this short notice it won't happen."
The second leg of the five-race series in the only one with an open water swimming leg.
The duathlon will be a 2.5km run-20km ride-2.5 run, with the two mini-man events to also proceed in a duathlon format.
"We do get feedback on people who would love to do the race but they're apprehensive about open water, so it may suit some people," Harper said.
"We also get a lot of people out of Canberra for the race but unfortunately they won't travel that distance for a duathlon event.
"It will knock our numbers around, but that's the drought."
The Riverina Tri Series will begin with the Ganmain Triathlon this Sunday at Ganmain sports oval.
