Smeeth finished with 99 not out as he led South Wagga to a six-wicket victory over the Cats at Robertson Oval.

Wagga City finished their 40 overs at 4-193, courtesy largely of half centuries to captain Josh Thompson (63) and Jon Nicoll (52 not out).

But it was not enough as the Blues chased down the runs with two overs to spare, and with the loss of just four wickets.

Smeeth, unaware of his score, brought up the winning runs with a boundary.

Stand-in South Wagga captain Luke Gerhard said it was a top knock from Smeeth.

"He batted really well. We were 30 off three overs, he was smashing them around," Gerhard said.

"He batted well and then everyone else chipped in. It was good."

Nathan Cooke helped South Wagga home with an unbeaten 23 and was second top scorer for the Blues.

Gerhard believes it was South Wagga's effort with the ball that won them the game.

"We did well to restrict them to what we did," he said.

"The wicket looked good and played pretty well, so for them to only finish four down and keep them under 200 was a pretty good effort. We bowled well and fielded well.

"I thought that was what probably won us the game."

Nathan Cooke took two wickets for South Wagga, while spinners Mitch Sykes and Lachie Skelly both finished with 1-39 from eight overs.

For Wagga City, Max Harper (2-32) and Josh Thompson (2-38) were the pick of the bowlers.

South Wagga expect to welcome back Joel Robinson, Blake Harper and Alex Jones for Tuesday night's Twenty20 fixture against Lake Albert.

Gerhard believes the Blues are travelling well.

"We're happy with how we're going," he said.

"We had four out of our side to potentially come back in on Tuesday so it was good to give a couple of young fellas a go and still get the win. That's pretty positive for us this year and in the future."
