Fifteen dogs, whose owners had come to Wagga after being urged to leave their homes to avoid the Dunns Road bushfire, were taken to the Glenfield Road Animal Shelter on Saturday.
About a dozen of the dogs are still staying at the shelter until their owners are given the all-clear to return to their homes.

Mark Gardiner, Wagga City Council's manager environment and compliance, said there had been space available at the animal shelter to help the dogs, mostly smaller breeds, to escape the heat.
Currently, there are also about 20 dogs at shelter awaiting adoption.
Mr Gardiner said no evacuee cats had been accommodated at the animal shelter because there was no available space, as there are currently 30 cats and kittens looking for a permanent home.
He said that number of cats was not unusual at this time of the year.
"It's the fallout from the cat breeding season and people not being responsible, which results in unwanted litters," Mr Gardiner said.
"Trying to find homes for all of them becomes difficult."
Mr Gardiner said families that were considering adopting a dog or cat could find out more from the animal shelter's website.
