With a very high fire danger forecast for Eastern Riverina, NSW police warned that people will risk a fine of more than $2000 if fireworks are illegally used.
Firefighters are currently facing "erratic" conditions as a bushfire raging near Tarcutta and Tumut has burned through more than 22,000 hectares.
State Emergency Operations Controller Deputy Commissioner Gary Worboys said the general public have been sent a very clear message and those setting off fireworks without an exemption will be "dealt with under the full force of the law".
In other news:
An on-the-spot fine of $2200 could be issued, but if the matter goes to court a penalty of up to $5500 and/or up to 12 months gaol time might apply.
"Using fireworks should be left to the professionals as they are dangerous and can cause significant injury or even death," Mr Worboys said.
Wagga City Council, as well as multiple neighbouring local government areas announced its fireworks displays were cancelled for New Year's Eve celebrations.
Police are appealing for anyone who witnesses another person using fireworks to contact the Riverina Police Station or triple-zero in an emergency.
