Wagga City Council mayor Greg Conkey said the responsible decision is to cancel the fireworks, however the entertainment part of the event will go ahead.
"With concerns of weather continuing to be very hot and dry, and in respecting various state authority concerns for these conditions, the decision was made to keep the community safe, as well as ensure that resources for fire fighting would be available where they are currently needed," he said.
"Whilst some community members will be disappointed in the fireworks not going ahead, we are confident the overall community will understand the current circumstances that we are facing."
The New Year's Eve festivities will take place at the Victory Memorial Gardens from 5pm to 9.30pm.
Cr Conkey said there will be an opportunity for the community to donate to the fire appeal collection efforts during the event.
