A NSW police spokeswoman said a search began for the 25-year-old Victorian man, who was swimming at Wagga Beach, after he failed to resurface about 1pm.
Officers from the Riverina Police District responded and the search operation involved the state's Volunteer Rescue Association, State Emergency Service, NSW Ambulance and a Toll Ambulance helicopter.
The spokeswoman said the man was located about 2.15pm, a short distance from where he was last seen.
A report will be prepared for the coroner.
