The stories flowed thick and fast throughout Sunday afternoon's gathering, while the sports memorabilia and donated goods were all auctioned off and raffled, to help raise significant funds to support Gaffey.
Son Troy said the family was thrilled with the response from the rugby league community.
"It was fantastic. Dad had a great day and that was what it was all about it," Troy said.
"I can't thank the guys that organised it enough. They've done a fantastic job, they took care of everything and all Dad had to do was turn up. It was great."
The former swashbuckling centre has been battling ill health. Representatives from his old clubs got together six weeks ago to organise the event.
Supported by the Riverina Men of League Foundation, the afternoon at the Commercial Club saw a host of former teammates and opponents come together to catch up and lend their support.
"It was a great afternoon as far as Len was concerned. He was very happy and he lasted the event," Riverina Men of League president Kel Tilden said.
"We got on board just to give a bit of a hand, we got some jumpers framed and organised. But it was the three clubs, Magpies, Turvey Park and Kangaroos who all got on board. And it helped raise some good funds."
Gaffey was a premiership player with Kangaroos, had a year in Sydney with Cronulla in its early years, and played for Magpies on his return. He also represented Riverina and Group 20.
