A spokesperson for the Rural Fire Service said firefighters are dealing with two separate grassfires along the Hume Highway.
"Crews were called to the road near Mundarlo at 7.30pm, where a fire that started in the median strip spread to the eastern side of the road," he said.
"So far it has burnt nine hectares. It has been contained."
The spokesperson said brigades were alerted at 7.45pm to one near Tarcutta which is being controlled. The Hume Highway was closed as crew worked in the area.
"The Hume Highway was closed as 28 firefighters are working on that fire," he said.
Neither fire poses any threat to homes or properties. Drivers are asked to allow for delays. Police are directing traffic in the area.

Firefighters are working to contain a fire burning near the Hume Highway.
Crews were called to the scene at Mundarlo on Tuesday night.
One northbound lane is closed as the brigades work to extinguish the fire.
In an online statement, the Riverina Highlands RFS said local crews are responding to a running grassfire on the Hume Highway near Mundarlo after a request for assistance was received from South West Slopes Zone.
According to the Fires Near Me app, a grassfire is also burning near the Hume Highway at Tarcutta.
