The 19-year-old regional sports co-ordinator has found employment with the Catholic Education Diocese of Wagga Wagga after recently completing his traineeship.
In September, he was named as the Trainee of the Year at the NSW Trainee Awards, after taking out the award of the same name at the Riverina Training Awards in June.
On Thursday night at a ceremony in Brisbane, it will be officially known whether his bid for the Australian Trainee of the Year Award is successful.
"I would love to win it absolutely, but there are some awesome people I've met who are up for it, they have awesome stories," Mr Heffernan said.
"There will be plenty for me to do at a state level [even if I don't win]. The pathway, I think, will mean I can help back at home, go to school careers expos and share what vocational education has done for me."

Up to seven representatives from every state and territory are in the running for the award and after spending the past two weeks in each other's company, Mr Heffernan is confident he is up against fierce competition.
"I've been in Brisbane since Monday, going to workshops, doing the interview and meeting the others," he said.
"It's been inspirational hearing from the others on how they've gotten to where they are, there are some amazing stories."
Even if the national award does not come his way in the near future, Mr Heffernan is looking forward to his journey's continuation.
"The biggest thing is that [vocational education] has opened all sorts of avenues for me to pursue my passion both professional and for myself," Mr Heffernan said.
"I get to work in a field a like, and [it's given me confidence to] run my own business as a musician, build a house and stay in my community."
