In her 47th start, Dawn Ofa New Brew found herself hitting the line first after a close finish at Riverina Paceway on Tuesday.
She had been placed on seven occasions previously, the most recent in July, but just got her head to the line in front of $1.50 favourite North Canam to win by a half head.
It is a case of perseverance paying off Christine and Trevor Brewer.
Christine bred, owns and trains the mares while her husband driver did the driving.
"She has been a work in progress so it was good for Trev," Christine Brewer said.
"He's had a lot of drives for not much success so it was good to get back in the winners circle.
"He works hard and deserves the win but you've just got to be in the right place at the right time in some of these races."
Dawn Ofa New Brew was given the perfect trip after settling behind the leader after drawing barrier one.
She then used the sprint lane to her advantage to win at $21.
It also ended a seven-year drought for the husband and wife combination.
It was their first success since moving to Uranquinty four years ago with Brew Emerence their last winner at Newcastle in 2012.
Brewer admitted they've had a lot of problems with the mare, who first hit the track in 2015.
"She had a rock removed from her intestine that nearly killed her," she said.
With Trevor now 75 the Brewers have cut back on their racing stock, with just three currently in work, but there's nearly 50 horses on the farm.
"That's ranging from broodmares and foals right through to 26 and 27-year-olds," Christine said.
