From 2020 the top side in the National Premier League Two at the end of the regular season will win promotion to the top tier of the senior and under-20 divisions, with the NPL One wooden spooners to be relegated.

After making the move from Sydney this year, the Wanderers finished sixth in their inaugural campaign, with a mid-season slump costing them a finals berth in their maiden Canberra campaign.

The Wanderers laid the foundation for the future with their under-18 and under-20 teams both winning their grand finals, and they hope more talented senior players will complement that base.

"It (NPL1 promotion) is achievable every year for us," Wanderers director Brendan Flanagan said.

"Our goal, and we're well on the way to doing it is to become a powerhouse in the competition.

"You look at our juniors where the 18s won it, the 16s were a penalty shootout off a grand final and the twenties won as well, and that was our first year.

"We want to get up to NPL One and lift the standard available for our juniors coming through as well, that's the goal."

The Wanderers will hold the first of two open trials on Saturday, where new coach Michael Babic will be on hand to gauge if any players are worthy of being added to the squad.

"A lot of our twenties had been playing senior football at state league and NPL level since they were 14 or 15. We've got a solid group coming through anyway, but it would be nice to have some more of those senior players on board," Flanagan said.

"The hard part when we started was we didn't have enough come in and had to blood juniors before their time, and they're stronger for it now.

The under-20s will revert to an under-23 league next year, with the number of overage players permitted for each team reduced from six to five.
