The Thunder dominated possession at Equex Centre on Saturday but struggled to get through Tumut's defence.
Halfback Robbie Byatt rued how the 17-10 loss unfolded.
"We played exceptionally well in parts and I thought we played well enough to win the game but silly mistakes crept in and you can't do things like that against teams like that," Byatt said.
"He didn't take our opportunities.
"You have to take the opportunities when they arrive and we paid for it in the end."
However Byatt believes there is plenty of good signs for the future of the club.
Especially after taking some big steps forward after missing out on finals last seasons.
"The team has come a long way and improved from last year," he said.
"We will keep building, have a good young team and will try to keep everyone together and see how we go."
