On Tuesday night, 115 individuals and schools were honoured at the 2019 NSW Minister's and Secretary's Awards for Excellence.
Connor Higgins and India Becroft from Wagga High School both received the award for Excellence in Student Achievement.
"I am in the leadership team, so we help around the school and have a voice for the students," Connor said.
"I am heavily involved in debating as well."
Connor described himself as a proud Wiradjuri man, adding it motivated him to be a leader.
"The school has pretty much helped me understand my culture, right from in year eight when I started my language and culture course," he said.
"From there it has grown."
India, the school vice-captain, said she has always considered education a privilege.
"The award is quite an honour," she said.
"I have tried to take every day of school and give it 110 per cent and grab any opportunity with both hands."
India said it was a special moment to win the award.
Kathryn Fischer received a Minister's Award for Excellence in Teaching for her work at Wagga High.
"I have been teaching for 15 years," she said.
"I think it's important to build connections with each student and get to know them, so they feel safe so that they can thrive.
"I have loved every part of teaching and the progression of teaching."
Over the years, Stuart Meiklejohn has been heavily involved with Wagga High School's Parent and Citizens Association.
"I have held several positions with the P&C," he said.
"I have regularly attended meetings, and I have done my best to fundraise for the school with barbecues, selling chocolates and the raffles.
"I am a big believer in public education."
These efforts saw him bestowed with a Public School Parent of the Year Award.
"It was very humbling," Mr Meiklejohn said.
