On June 17, 2018, David McCartney was at home when he saw smoke coming from a rear room of a nearby house and went to investigate.
At the house, he was told by some of the residents that two children and an immobile man were still inside.
Despite the increasing intensity of the fire, Mr McCartney immediately ran to the rear of house, smashed a bedroom window and found a young girl lying on a bed.
He rescued her, then went back inside and helped a young boy out of another bedroom, despite the family dog becoming aggressive towards him.
An elderly wheelchair-using resident refused to leave, but the Rural Fire Service then arrived at the scene and extinguished the fire.
